Introduction

Computer Science at Stratford Girls’ Grammar School aims to take initial interest in the tech industry and help students understand the role they can play within this exciting field. From gaming to coding, students of Computer Science have the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills in an ever-evolving area that opens the door to a multitude of modern career paths.

 

Sixth Form Curriculum

Students will be taught by specialist teachers with experience of industry, teaching and moderation for the exam boards; bringing a fundamental passion for the subject and unrivalled preparation for projects and final exams.

At A-level, lessons are taught as a mixture of theory, workshops and practical programming challenges. Many times, games are created to explore programming paradigms and create very strong programmers. A practical subject, taught practically, there will also be an extended programming project which will see students develop their coding skills.

Topics of study include the characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output/storage devices, software development, exchanging data, data types, data structures and algorithms, as well as legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues.

Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the extensive resources available including fantastic IT equipment, online learning environments, Virtual Reality (VR) equipment, games engines and a plethora of classic games consoles.

The SGGS Computer Science department also runs a variety of external trips throughout the course to conventions, universities, other lectures and talks. External speakers and trainers from industry attend the school regularly throughout the year to help further hone student skills.

Computer Science is a hugely creative subject and skills such as problem-solving and analytical thinking are refined and explored. This qualification provides a range of transferable skills that are useful in a variety of careers.
