Congratulations  to Daphne Katz (Year 11)  who won the  Midland Arden Region's 18th Soroptimist Young Speaker Competition held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Solihull on March 16th.  The event provides students age 14-18, who attend non fee-paying schools, the opportunity to choose from a list of zeitgeist topics to speak on. 

Daphne spoke for 4 minutes (with no prompts) on the thorny subject of Yesterday's Wrongs, Tomorrow's Rights: #MeToo A Movement Gone Too Far?  Competing against seven other students  from across the region, Daphne held the floor with her compelling and thoroughly researched point of view.

Describing her speech as 'quite radical' in comparison to the other speakers, fifteen year old Daphne adopted the stance that it is yesterday that informs today and that no movement can possibly be described as having gone 'too far' when at the heart of it lies the desire for tolerance, truth and universal acceptance.

For her efforts, Daphne takes home a £150 cash prize. The Soroptimist Young Speaker Trophy returns to SGGS for the second year running; in 2018 Sinead McColl won the prize.
