Empowering Young Environmentalists: Reflections on the First Alliance Schools Sustainability Conference

Earlier this month we were given the opportunity to take a small group of budding Geographers and members of our Eco Committee to the first alliance sustainability conference, hosted in the Grieg Hall, Alcester.  The experience was incredibly positive, creating an environment that not only fostered collaboration but also ignited a genuine passion for environmental stewardship among the students. By engaging in hands-on activities and discussions, students were able to see the tangible impact of sustainable practices and understand the critical role they play in protecting our planet. The exchange of ideas and successful initiatives between different schools enriched the participants' knowledge and inspired them to implement similar actions in their own schools. This collective effort not only enhanced their understanding of the global sustainability goals but also empowered them to become proactive advocates for environmental change in their communities. The day’s events left the students feeling motivated and equipped with practical strategies to champion sustainability, reinforcing the importance of collective action and the power of education in driving meaningful environmental progress.  Alice, a member of our Eco Committee explains her thoughts on the day below;

We started the day at 9:30 am and met up with our table groups. The tables had a good mix of different schools and this allowed us to talk to others and learn what they are doing towards a more sustainable school. The activities allowed us to learn about the 17 sustainability goals as well as ways to work towards a more connected a sustainable alliance.

The talks were given by exemplary speakers and were interesting and engaging whilst still being informative and giving participants a new perspective on sustainability and it’s importance. Overall the day was very interactive and helpful in furthering connections between schools and it was an excellent way to promote and improve upon sustainably in our schools. We really enjoyed our day at the first alliance school’s sustainability conference and look forward to hopefully being involved in future conferences.
