Our Sixth Form Students Gain Insight into Finance at NFU Mutual
A group of ten Sixth Form students studying A-Level Maths and/or Economics had an incredible opportunity to visit NFU Mutual’s offices for an exciting half-day session focused on careers in investments. The visit provided students with valuable insights into the world of finance and even allowed them to experience managing a practice portfolio.
The event was arranged by NFU Mutual as part of their commitment to addressing the under-representation of women in finance—particularly in their Investment department. By welcoming aspiring female investors, NFU Mutual is taking an active role in promoting diversity and inclusion within the industry.
One of our Sixth Form students, Raveena, reflected on the experience:
“I recently had the incredible opportunity to spend a day at the NFU Mutual office, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. From learning about the intricacies of the insurance and financial industries to diving into the fast-paced world of stock trading and property investment, the day was packed with valuable insights and hands-on learning.
One of the highlights was exploring the role of a stock dealer. We were introduced to a Bloomberg terminal and taught about liquid vs. illiquid stocks, risk levels, and how the market is constantly evolving. It was fascinating to see how data-driven and dynamic the world of trading truly is.
I also had the chance to speak with brokers and employees who shared their experiences and walked me through the investment process. Their stories and advice were incredibly inspiring, especially as I’m deeply interested in pursuing a combined degree in finance and law in the future. Their insights gave me a clearer understanding of the skills and dedication required to succeed in this industry.
The most engaging part of the day was participating in a model stock investor competition. We analysed stock prices, P/E ratios, and the current state of companies to make investment decisions. It was both challenging and rewarding—and I’m thrilled to share that I won a trophy at the end of it! This was undoubtedly the highlight of my day and a moment I’ll always remember.
This experience has left me feeling more confident and excited about my future career pathway. I’m particularly drawn to the intersection of finance and law, as I believe it offers unique opportunities to work in areas like corporate law, financial regulation, or investment management.
